A recent study by Klook reveals that Millennials and Gen Z view travel as an essential form of self-care. For 64%, it’s a reset button, providing a break from daily monotony and a confidence boost. Despite recognising travel’s stress-relieving potential, 92% of these young travellers experience post-travel blues, often immediately planning their next getaway.
Time’s up: The struggle is real
Time remains the biggest hurdle, with 74% of Chinese travellers feeling particularly time-strapped. Meanwhile, 38% of Australians enjoy more flexibility in scheduling their trips. Whether it’s work or daily life, the challenge of carving out time for travel is undeniable.
Experience over everything
Financially, 91% of Millennials and Gen Z prioritise experiences over other travel expenses. They prefer bundling packages to stretch their budgets further, with Gen Z leading the charge in seeking unique, authentic experiences. Local cuisine and off-the-beaten-path spots are top of the list, proving that experiences, not souvenirs, matter most.
Social media: Travel’s new travel agent
Social media is shaping travel decisions, with 79% of young travellers booking based on recommendations from platforms like Instagram. Travellers from Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines are most influenced by social suggestions, while those in Australia, Japan, and the US are less swayed. And yes, aesthetic-driven travellers are still willing to pay up to 20% more for Instagrammable experiences.
2025: The year of adventure
Looking ahead, 84% of young travellers have already planned at least one international trip for 2025, up from 71% in 2024. 28% are seeking entirely new destinations, with Japan topping the list and China seeing a surge in interest. Klook also identified 25 emerging destinations, offering both city and nature-based experiences.
